The two-year period surrounding the start of the COVID-19 pandemic was the focal point of this study, which explored how popular Irish news media disseminated causal explanations for mental illness. Keyword searches of a news media database yielded 1892 articles published from March 2018 through March 2022, each referencing at least one of these six categories of mental disorders: anxiety disorders, mood disorders, substance-related disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders, and psychotic disorders. The analysis of the articles showed that 25% of them included an explanation of mental illness grounded in causality.
